Jack Chambers and Gerda Eisler

Jack met Gerda at a "Support the Republicans" Dance organised by the British communists - The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Jack was a member of the Party. He was 24, Gerda was 18. They married in 1939 when Gerda turned 21. The marriage may also saved Gerda Eisler from being interned: her adopted father and her brother, Freddie, were; despite being a Jewish asylum-seekers and UK residents for six years). In fairness to the British authorities, Hermann Isay - Gerda's and natural father had married a Catholic and converted. They appologised to Freddie two years later |
